About Airplane Mode

Introducing Airplane Mode, a new monthly evening series at Wylde Center’s Oakhurst Garden.

Once a month, we invite you to turn on airplane mode on your phone and step into a night of hands-on making, slow activities, and creative exploration in the garden.

Admission is free, and guests are welcome to explore self-guided stations throughout the evening—including puzzles, coloring, letter writing, and other creative activities—at their own pace. Each month also features an optional ticketed workshop led by a local artist or maker for those who want to learn a new skill and create something to take home.

Every Airplane Mode is inspired by a new seasonal theme, bringing fresh creative experiences while keeping the same spirit of slowing down, making with your hands, and connecting with community.

Feel free to bring your favorite snacks and beverages!

Join us for our September Airplane Mode on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:00 pm!

This September, Airplane Mode invites you to slow down and pay attention to the changing season. Field Notes is an evening of noticing, observing, and creatively documenting the world around us.

Inspired by the tradition of keeping a nature journal, this month’s theme encourages you to take a closer look at the plants, textures, colors, and small details of the garden. Whether you’re sketching, writing, collecting observations, or simply taking time to notice what’s around you, Field Notes is an invitation to slow down and see the season a little differently.

As always, admission to Airplane Mode is free, with self-guided activities to enjoy throughout the evening and an optional ticketed workshop for those who want to learn something new.

Journalmaking Workshop

Our optional ticketed workshop, Simple Journalmaking starts at 6:00 p.m. Join our Executive Director, Stephanie Van Parys, a bookbinder now for over 10 years, for a 30 minute slot to learn how to assemble your own journal for daily notetaking, your next adventure, or sketching.  You’ll learn how to assemble and sew journals using decorative cover paper, cards, and fun pages. The $15 fee includes all materials and workshops will take place at 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30.  Sign up for the optional workshop here(opens in new tab).

Free activities include:

  • Write a postcard: You bring your addresses and we will provide the postcards and stamps. We will also mail your postcards if you’d like. A change jar will be set up if you would like to cover the cost of the stamps.
  • Puzzle station: We will set up a fun puzzle, and we challenge our attendees to finish the puzzle in two hours!
  • Mahjong Tables: We will have two tables set up with tiles, mats and racks. You just need to bring your 2026 NMJL player card to the table.
  • Coloring: We will provide an on theme coloring sheet and colored pencils for you to relax and color in the garden.
  • Hands-on making: Explore a curated selection of materials inspired by the month’s theme and create freely at your own pace.

Have a favorite analog hobby? Feel free to bring your own knitting, sketchbook, embroidery, book, or other creative project to enjoy in the garden.

Whether you’re crafting, writing a postcard, working on a puzzle, or simply enjoying the garden, Tactile Summer is an invitation to slow down, make something with your hands, and spend time in community.

This event is free, but please RSVP here (opens in new tab)so we know how many guests to expect.
