About Airplane Mode

Introducing Airplane Mode, a new monthly evening series at Wylde Center's Oakhurst Garden.

Once a month, we invite you to turn on airplane mode on your phone and step into a night of hands-on making, slow activities, and creative exploration in the garden.

Admission is free, and guests are welcome to explore self-guided stations throughout the evening—including puzzles, coloring, letter writing, and other creative activities—at their own pace. Each month also features an optional ticketed workshop led by a local artist or maker for those who want to learn a new skill and create something to take home.

Every Airplane Mode is inspired by a new seasonal theme, bringing fresh creative experiences while keeping the same spirit of slowing down, making with your hands, and connecting with community.

Feel free to bring your favorite snacks and beverages!

Join us for our first Airplane Mode on Tuesday, August 11 at 6:00 pm!*

Our inaugural Airplane Mode theme, Tactile Summer, is an invitation to experience the season through touch by slowing down, making with your hands, and discovering the beauty of physical materials.

Inspired by texture, repetition, and sensory exploration, Tactile Summer celebrates the simple joy of creating something by hand. Throughout the evening, guests can enjoy free self-guided activities that encourage creativity and connection.

Our optional ticketed workshop, Beaded Botanicals with Scraplanta starts at 6:30 p.m. and offers the opportunity to learn a new skill and create a sculptural beaded plant to take home. Sign up for the optional workshop here.

Free activities include:

  • Write a postcard: You bring your addresses and we will provide the postcards and stamps. We will also mail your postcards if you'd like. A change jar will be set up if you would like to cover the cost of the stamps.
  • Puzzle station: We will set up a fun puzzle, and we challenge our attendees to finish the puzzle in two hours!
  • Mahjong Tables: We will have two tables set up with tiles, mats and racks. You just need to bring your 2026 NMJL player card to the table.
  • Coloring: We will provide an on theme coloring sheet and colored pencils for you to relax and color in the garden.
  • Hands-On Making: Explore a curated selection of materials inspired by the month's theme and create freely at your own pace.

Have a favorite analog hobby? Feel free to bring your own knitting, sketchbook, embroidery, book, or other creative project to enjoy in the garden.

Whether you're crafting, writing a postcard, working on a puzzle, or simply enjoying the garden, Tactile Summer is an invitation to slow down, make something with your hands, and spend time in community.

This event is free, but please RSVP here so we know how many guests to expect.

*Please note, this event is for adults only.

July 16 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Event Series (See All)

Keep the fun going by planting a second summer garden. Our summer growing season in Atlanta is so long that you can sow second and sometimes third plantings of certain vegetables, herbs, and flowers. This is especially helpful when you start your garden late or vegetables you planted back in April have slowed down or (yikes!) died. Join Stephanie Van Parys, Wylde Center’s executive director and horticulturist as she discusses the different vegetables, herbs, and flowers you may plant in…
